Exhibition on Screen: Vermeer – The Greatest Exhibition (PG)

Director: David Bickerstaff
Starring: Robert Lindsay
Documentary | UK | 2023
1 hr 30 mins

This documentary, part of the Exhibition on Screen series, explores the curation of the largest ever Vermeer exhibition, mounted in 2023 by the Rijksmuseum. It is a rich opportunity to enjoy the exquisite works of one of the best loved of painters. It raises questions such as what makes a Vermeer a Vermeer, debating authorship and authenticity, through scrutinising in detail the minutiae of brushstrokes. The film explores the little we know of Vermeer’s life, described as a task similar to researching the life of Shakespeare. In this gentle, thoughtful documentary we learn from the leading experts whose knowledge of subject is matched by their passion for the art works.

Hopper – An American Love Story (12A) | Mowlem Theatre

Director: Phil Grabsky
Documentary | UK | 2022
1 hr 34 mins

This film from the acclaimed series, Exhibition on Screen, examines the life and work of that most American of artists, Edward Hopper. Entitled An American Love Story, it refers to his love of USA, of everyday life, of architecture and of film, particularly Hitchcock and film noir. An Impressive biography, it portrays a complex love for his wife with whom he had a conflicted, difficult relationship, but on whom he depended. As with other films in this series, the camera lingers on the artworks, allowing viewers to contemplate and respond without being told what they are seeing. Interestingly, his is the artistic work most often used to illustrate articles during the COVID period depicting isolation and loneliness or what Hopper preferred to call it, “solitude”.

with special guest Phil Grabsky
