French couple Antonie and Olga run an organic farm in the Spanish hills but antagonism begins to flare up between them and the local mountain people who have worked the valley for generations. The tension slowly rises to a fever pitch until it reaches an unforgettable climax in this searing drama based on a true story, which invites comparison to similarly powerful 70s classics such as Straw Dogs and Deliverance.

The Night of the 12th (15) | EUROPEAN CRIME NIGHT 1 | The Rex

A detailed and thoroughly engrossing police procedural that is based on a real life case, The Night Of The 12th was a huge hit in its native France last year, and caused pointed debate in French society around institutional misogyny in the police force. It shows the ripple effect of a senseless killing of a young woman in a small mountain community, and follows police officer Yohan as the case slowly takes him over. Like the similarly haunting Zodiac, this film never resolves the central case but provides plenty of suspects, and the viewer becomes as obsessed as Yohan with the ambiguity that surrounds the murder.

We’ve all had one of those anxiety-induced nightmares where we find ourselves trying to get to a meeting or an important event on time when everything seems to be conspiring against us. Thankfully, we usually wake up from them but, unfortunately, for single mum Julie (Laure Calamy) this is what she gets up to almost every day.

The application of the action genre to daily routine pays off very effectively in this intelligent and engrossing film about a situation that will seem all too familiar to many. Gravel’s film cleverly unites quietly observed humanism and palpable tension and makes them work well together.

Screened first at Venice Film festival, this sensitive, multifaceted film explores one woman’s experience, lost chances and last chances. Virginie Elfira is charismatic as a childless stepmother, unlike all fictional stereotypes of a step-parent. With a great-hearted jazz score, excellent and nuanced acting, the film is rightly billed as “a gentle and heartfelt relationship drama about and for intelligent adults”.

The first film in the Three Colours trilogy, Blue traces Juliette Binoche’s character, Julie, in her attempt to start life anew, independently and anonymously, following tragic personal loss. We come to know, through the director’s exploration, the true nature of Julie, reading her thoughts and emotions through close-ups of her face and haunting repetitions of fragments of music. The trilogy is on all lists of the greatest films and Blue, now remastered, is often described as a masterpiece.
