Starring: Rameet Rauli, Viraj Juneja, Seema Bowri
Comedy | Drama | UK | 2022
1 hr 38 mins

This laugh-out-loud British comedy is in the tradition of East is East. It follows a dysfunctional Punjabi family in the pressure cooker life of a terraced suburban home in Slough. Newly arrived from India, naive Simmy has come to marry the family’s eldest son Raj, who promptly gets cold feet and absconds, leaving Simmy locked in the house with her passport confiscated by his domineering mother. However, Simmy is resourceful and cunning, and soon enlists some unlikely support from the sugar crazed, diabetic grandpa and the dangerous but attractive brother-in-law, fresh out of jail. A riotous domestic farce with a big heart.

THE LAST FILM SHOW (12A) | Closing Gala | The Rex

THE LAST FILM SHOW (12A) | Closing Gala | The Rex

Director: Pan Nalin
Starring: Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena
Drama | Comedy | India | 2021 | 1 hr 50 mins | Subtitles

This heart-warming Indian film is in the tradition of the classic Cinema Paradiso. Like that film, it has a young boy – here it is the impoverished 9-year-old Samay – becoming entranced with the power of cinema and befriending the local projectionist. In this case, however, Samay decides watching is not enough and decides to make a film of his own. A film as utterly bewitched by cinema as its lead character – and clearly grieving over the death of old celluloid projection – it bursts with the colour, light and sensuousness of rural India. The Last Film Show celebrates cinema while simultaneously embodying great cinema.

Masaan (12A) | The Rex

Director: Neeraj Ghaywan Starring: Richa Chadha, Sanjay Mishra,
Drama | India | 2015 | 1 hr 49 mins | Subtitles

Present-day India is a country caught between modernity and tradition. Deepak falls in love with a girl from a different caste, while Devi commits an offence that threatens to bring shame and scandal to her home, forcing her father to acquiesce to the demands of a corrupt policeman. Filmed on location in the holy city of Benares, on the bank of the Ganges, Masaan may be regarded as an agent in the movement for progress. The magnificent, ancient architecture running along the river cannot help but evoke the splendour of an earlier era. Masaan received a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival.
