The Blue Pool feels like the perfect place to host a fantasy film, because it feels like a place taken out of one. The scenery is gorgeous, with everyone attending getting out their seats to take photos of this beautiful area of Purbeck. All sorts of animals came out to roam around the seats and people, such as black cats and peacocks, just adding to the mystical atmosphere and getting the audience ready for the film.
If youโve ever wanted to watch a film where a singing David Bowie steals a baby, and puppet goblins try to kill a young girl, then this is the perfect watch for you. Itโs a weird plot, but it sums up the strange and wonderful film that is Labyrinth.
It follows a young girl called Sarah (Jenifer Connelly in her breakout role) who wishes away her baby brother with a poem from the book Labyrinth. However, the spell works and the goblin king (David Bowie) takes the child and gives Sarah a time-limit to get him back, if she can make her way through his confusing labyrinth full of scary and stupid characters.
Bowieโs Goblin King is by far one of his most iconic roles. His outfits are impeccable, his makeup is amazing, and his music for the film is one of the best soundtracks to a fantasy film I have ever heard. His every movement in the film is mesmerising, and even though heโs an evil baby snatcher, you canโt help but love him because of the portrayal given by Bowie.
Labyrinth was created by the most iconic puppeteer in film: Jim Henson (known for being the creator of The Muppets), and this film really shows why he got this name. Every character other than Sarah and the Goblin King are puppets, and yet they seem so real through the way they move, speak and even through their facial expressions. It makes sense that Henson has become such an icon in the film industry; his talent to create these puppets in films remains unmatched. Even though it has become a bit dated, now that it is 40 years old, it never loses its charm due to Henson (and the little worm everyone knows and loves from the beginning of the film).
It became the blueprint for so many fantasy films and books, especially Harry Potter (and you can see where inspiration was taken from when watching the film) and even to this day is still having an influence on the fantasy genre. Itโs a weird but wonderful film that will remain iconic for a long time.
