Discover three extraordinary documentaries, from the forests of France to the footpaths of England.

WHISPERS IN THE WOODS
Wildlife photographer Vincent Munier grew up in the Vosges mountains of eastern France, where his father Michel taught him to sit still and listen. In Whispers in the Woods the two men take Vincent’s young son Simon into that same forest, handing the knowledge on to a third generation. What they witness is extraordinary: rutting stags, rare lynx, fledgling owls and the shy capercaillie, caught with a patience few cameras ever manage. Over a million people saw it in French cinemas and it won the Cรฉsar for Best Documentary. Its misty deer grace the cover of this year’s guide, and we’re showing it ahead of UK release.

THE TALE OF SILYAN
Tamara Kotevska, Oscar-nominated for Honeyland, returns to rural North Macedonia for The Tale of Silyan. Farmer Nikola Conev can no longer make his crops pay, so he takes work at a rubbish tip, where he rescues an injured stork. As his family leave for Germany, man and bird keep each other company. Kotevska threads Macedonian folklore through the story.

OUR LAND
Closer to home, Orban Wallace’s Our Land asks a pointed question. In a country famous for its countryside, who is actually allowed to walk in it? Much of England remains closed to the public, and Wallace brings campaigners, landowners and conservationists together to argue it out.
Afterwards he joins Jack Cornish, Director of England at the Ramblers and author of The Lost Paths, Laura Manningham-Buller from the local Rempstone Estate and Ann Maidment of the Countryside and Land Alliance for a discussion chaired by Tom Clarke of National Trust Purbeck.
