Set three years into Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, Manuela Martelli’s film debut shows how the regime carried out its culture of intimidation and fear. Carmen is a well to-do Chilean woman, married to a wealthy doctor, spending her time reading to a blind group through her church and socialising with her upper crust friends. She is busy trying to choose paint colour for the renovations on her summer home, but things change after she hears the sounds of a woman being violently arrested by Pinochet’s forces. When the family priest asks her to take care of a young man he is sheltering in secret, Carmen steps away from the quiet life she is used to. The film is based on a true story, showing how Carmen is drawn into the world of the Chilean political opposition.
