Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, a British-Irish playwright and filmmaker known for his absurdist black humour (In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri), the film is set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland in 1923 with the sounds of the Irish civil war on the mainland. Padraic’s (Colin Farrell) simple, routine life is devastated when his lifelong friend Colm (Brendan Gleeson) decides he no longer wants to waste time on their daily but mundane and trivial chats, but to spend his remaining time more meaningfully on his music. Padraic cannot understand or accept Colm’s decision and Colm feels forced to make his intentions clear in a disturbing way. Mark Kermode in his review describes it as a ‘flawless tragicomedy of male friendship gone sour’.
