BARBIE (12A)

Director: Greta Gerwig | Writers: Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach Cast: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling Adventure • Comedy • Fantasy | 2023 | 1h 54m

In the seemingly utopian Barbieworld, Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) has an existential crisis that upsets her ostensibly perfect existence and sets her upon a quest into the real world to find her destiny. Meanwhile Ken (Ryan Gosling) has an awakening of his own in Barbie’s absence.

Instead of what could have been a cynical cash-grab, Barbie became THE cultural phenomenon of 2023, finishing up as the biggest box office earner of the year with nearly $1.5 billion worldwide takings. A lot of this is down to Margot Robbie, who, as well as starring, produced the film and helped secure its success by hiring indie auteur Greta Gerwig who brings her idiosyncratic, postmodern edge and off the wall sense of humour.

The film is a wild ride with its plethora of sight gags, songs, surrealism and irony, that  somehow all comes together to give us the most laugh-out-loud moments of any recent blockbuster (the final line is a doozy), with the dayglo charisma of its two leads cementing the whole thing together.
