A beautiful film, expertly directed, beautifully acted, poetic, nostalgic, sentimental, and in a way championing good old-fashioned Britishness, except that except that criticising the pursuit of war and homosexual love were not seen as British in war poet Siegfried Sassoon’s own lifetime. So a sad film, haunted as Sassoon was by the horrors of the Great War and the loss of his lover Wilfred Owen, which nothing and no relationship and no religion could relieve him of. Director Terence Davies returns here to themes of his earlier films – guilt, shame, failure and introspection, together with the painful pursuit of faith and beauty.
