Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Starring: Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona
Comedy | Crime | Drama | South Korea | 2022
2 hrs 9 mins | Subtitles

Another foray by the director into the complex range of moral dilemmas facing everyday Korean citizens. For those ill-equipped to handle or pay for the upkeep of a new-born baby, Korea has a long-established practice of “Baby boxes”, where one can deposit the child and it will be adopted by those with the money and desire to do so. Could this practice throw up some complexities, doubts, and moral dilemmas? – you bet it could. However, Kore-eda wants you to think this through from all angles. Are they good people or bad people, and is it that much better for a baby to enter the Korean foster system than to be sold to a family who will love and care for it? Such questions hang in the air. Are we in the west really any better or wiser. Recommended viewing.

The Purbeck Film Festival is very grateful to Commercial Loans and Finance, whose support will make this a very special evening.
