Cairo Conspiracy /Boy from Heaven (12A) | The Lighthouse

Director: Tarik Saleh
Starring: Tawfeek Barhom, Fares Fares, Mohammad Bakri
Drama | Thriller | Egypt | 2022
2 hrs 6 min| Subtitles

Cairo Conspiracy is an unusual and fascinating portrait of a world unknown to most non-Muslims. Set in Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, where the students square off in Quran recital contests. The University is promoted as “a beacon of Islam” but in reality it’s a warren of dark corners, thick with intrigue and conspiracies. It creates an atmosphere both sacred and threatening and one genuinely fears for its central character, Adam, a lowly fisherman’s son. His naive vulnerability makes him the perfect pawn for those who wish to exploit his innocence in the quest for power. Following the death of the University’s chief Imman and spiritual leader, the drama and paranoia reach new heights. Cairo Conspiracy is a compelling watch.
