Champions is an underdog sports film in the Bad News Bears / Mighty Ducks style with Woody Harrelson perfect in the Walter Matthau role as the boozy, cynical coach, but the real show stealers here are the cast of youngsters with genuine disabilities, both developmental and physical. Harrelson plays Marcus, a temperamental assistant coach who is given community service after driving under the influence. His sentence is 90 days coaching a basketball team of young disabled players. Champions sidesteps cheap sentimentality and condescension in treating its unique young cast with honesty and respect, whilst also providing all the crowd-pleasing laughs and thrills you’d expect from this genre.
