Close reveals that the conventions of male relationships can be beyond painful. Rémi and Léo are inseparable. They hang out together and play together all the time. Physical, joyful and innocent, their relationship embraces every aspect of their young lives. Their schoolmates gradually suggest that they are a “couple” and Leo withdraws from Rémi, blanks him in the playground and adopts more macho interests. For Rémi, Léo’s sudden decision to break up with him is beyond catastrophic. There’s no doubting the force of this sad story. Close is an unforgettable and important piece of modern cinema.
