Daphne Du Maurier’s short thriller stories have made terrific films – Hitchcock’s The Birds is another. This one might similarly be classed as of the horror genre, but is much more subtle, sinister rather than scary, deeply touching, as it concerns a couple trying to come to terms with the death of their young daughter. Set in Venice the city seems haunted and tainted by their grief, as well it seems by the shade of their lost child. Renowned perhaps for its sex scene, this is in fact one of the most touching portrayals on film of the intimacy between two lovers.
