Hilary (Olivia Colman) is a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, who meets Stephen (Michael Ward), a new employee trying to escape the prejudice he faces in a provincial town where he lives. Hilary’s job of front of house manager at the fading Empire Cinema in an English seaside town isn’t helping her mental state, but things change dramatically after the arrival of the new employee. They form an unlikely relationship in a storyline highlighting the unifying power of the cinema.
