An exquisitely shot literary odyssey, based on the life of author Thomas Mann. Here he is travelling with his daughter Erika, returning after exile in America to an apocalyptically ruined Germany in 1949. There to collect a literary prize, they are both haunted by Klaus, Erikaโs tormented twin brother who remained in the US, while Mann struggles to adapt to the newly polarised geopolitical landscape.ย
A lean yet elegant film about the dark fulcrum of the 20th Century, it forms a loose historical trilogy with Pawlikowskiโs similarly rich Ida and Cold War. It was a keynote film at this year's Cannes, where Pawlikowski won Best Director.
