Holy Spider (18) | The Lighthouse

Director: Ali Abbasi
Starring: Alice Rahimi, Diana AL Hussen, Soraya Helli
Crime | Drama | Thriller | Iran | 2022
1 hr 58 min| Subtitles

Holy Spider is about an Islamic serial killer living in the ancient religious city of Mashad in Northeastern Iran. The film is based on the true life story of a religiously fervent construction worker convicted of killing 16 prostitutes in 2001. The “Spider killer”, as he was known, became a folk hero to the religious right for claiming to be on a holy mission to cleanse the city of prostitution. Saeed (the Spider killer) is a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s and despises himself for not having been more of a hero, or a martyr. But centre stage is a female investigative journalist from less conformist Tehran, who shows up wanting to crack this long-running case. In her mind, the local police and judiciary have half-heartedly failed to catch the killer due to their patriarchal and religious mindsets. Highly recommended viewing.
