Director: Emmanuelle Nicot Starring: Zelda Samson, Alexis Manenti Drama | France | Belgium | 2022 1 hr 28 mins | Subtitles
Dalva, Nicot’s debut drama, has received awards from audiences and critics alike for its delicate, yet honest storytelling of a 12-yearold girl. Zelda Samson offers an outstanding performance, captivating the audience with her spontaneity and intensity. Direction and cinematography are impressive and said to be reminiscent of the work of Sciamma. (Petite Maman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire). Nicot has based the narrative on extensive research and treats the challenging themes with empathy and sensitivity. The result is a touching, compassionate portrayal of a girl who must learn to be a child and discover the joys of friendship, leaving us with a feeling of hope. A Guardian critic stated that she was “reluctant to watch and when it started, I could not look away”.
