No Bears (12A) | The Lighthouse

Director: Jafar Panahi
Starring: Jafar Panahi, Naser Hashemi, Vahid Mobasheri
Drama | Romance | Iran | 2022
1 hr 46 min| Subtitles

The brilliant No Bears won Iranian director Jafar Panahi the Special Jury Award at the Venice Film Festival this year. Unfortunately, the socially conscious filmmaker is now serving a six-year prison sentence in Iran for “making propaganda against the system”. No Bears starts off deceptively simple, but, gradually, it becomes multi-layered as Panahi mixes docu-drama and auto-fiction to devastating emotional effect. He directed his film in Iran from a rented room near the Turkish border using his laptop. The story is filmed in Turkey and concerns a fact-based love story about a couple who fled to the west with false passports. In between filming, Panahi gets involved in another love story in the village where he is staying where fact and fiction become blurred and complex both for the village and for Panahi.

The Purbeck Film Festival is very grateful to the Arts University Bournemouth, whose support will make this a very special evening.
