Once Upon a Time in the West (15) | Mowlem Theatre

Western Night!

Director: Sergio Leone
Starring: Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards
Western | USA | Italy | 1968
2 hrs 45 mins excl. intermission of 15 mins

Some say “the greatest western ever made”, “a masterpiece”, the film which confirms the western as an artform, Once Upon a Time in the West follows Leone’s hugely successful spaghetti western trilogy. Shot in USA, Italy and Spain, Leone pays minute attention to the small details of western life. The visuals, including impressive landscapes, the acting and score (Morricone) have all received plaudits. It treats three classic western themes: fights over land, the coming of the railroad, and revenge. Leone deliberately selected Henry Fonda to play the coldest of villains, in, to audiences, a shocking reversal of roles. Cardinale, Robards and Bronson complete this exceptional cast. Although long, it is endlessly fascinating and fun, and this screening of the remastered version offers audiences a 15-minute break to draw breath and return for the finale.
