In a remote Himalayan village, elderly couple Padam and Tulsi are among the last to remain as the younger generation drifts to the cities. Their quiet days of routine and small tenderness are upended when a letter arrives from their estranged son after years of silence. Shot in the actual village where director Vinod Kapri grew up, with non-professional local actors whose performances feel utterly real, Pyre is a film of rare beauty and quiet power.

In Kapri's own words, 'It wasn't a film driven by commercial ambition. It was a labour of love.'

Winner of audience awards at film festivals across four continents, including the London Indian Film Festival.

Programmer’s Pick - Claire Burns – Festival Director

‘There’s a nice bit of logic to watching Pyre at The 29029. You’ll be eating Nepalese and Indian food in Sandford before embarking on a story set deep in the Himalayas and somehow that makes the whole evening feel so vivid. The film’s writer and director, Vinod Kapri, wrote to us ahead of this screening as he was especially moved to read about the Purbeck Film Festival, its volunteers and its mission to bring meaningful cinema to communities that otherwise have limited access to international and independent films. He said, ‘In many ways, Pyre was born from that very same spirit. It wasn’t a film driven by commercial ambition. It was a labour of love. So many wonderful people from artists to technicians and collaborators came together simply because they believed in the story. They contributed their time, talent and heart to help bring this film to life.

When a film is made with that kind of love, there is no greater reward than knowing it continues to find audiences who genuinely wish to experience it.’

Pyre isn’t currently available to stream or rent anywhere in the UK, so make sure you secure your tickets fast.’
