Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl is one of the world’s best directors of actors, and he nears some kind of a peak in Rimini, a blisteringly funny and often touching film about people struggling towards happiness despite having experienced lifetimes of disappointment. Richie Bravo is an ageing lounge singer with a drinking problem. The Austrian plies his trade, out of season, in the Italian seaside resort of Rimini. His audience are elderly European holidaymakers looking for cheap fun. He provides a little extra for fans who can pay. When his estranged daughter appears, money problems quickly materialise. While it’s beautifully shot, it’s a comedy drama which lives or dies by Richie’s performance, and he’s magnificently terrible. Rimini is a character study like no other.
