Based on a real trial which Alice Diop attended as an observer in 2016, here we see the story through the eyes of Rama, a novelist who is seeking inspiration for a modern reworking of the myth of Medea. What begins as a conventional mystery, an attempt to position guilt on a mother who has killed her baby, soon turns out to be something much more complex and harder to pin down. A great deal is presented in this film: the casual racism of academia, cultural beliefs that are exploited or misunderstood, the destructive extremes of the maternal instinct, the self-deceptions we create to stave off madness and the peace we must embrace to move on. Saint Omer is no small feat. It is riveting and uncompromising cinema of the highest order.
