In a rougher part of LA, Richard Williams powers his daughters Serena and Venus to tennis superstardom through sheer force of Will. An engrossing and detailed biopic that does not skimp on showing the flaws and neurosis of the man. Will Smith’s Oscar in the lead was overshadowed by his outburst at the ceremony, which is a shame as it’s a good one that is characteristically informed by emotion. Aunjanue Ellis might be even better as his wife. The girls are very charming and the film ends not with fist-pumping bombast but a truer, more human victory.
