This is a Western with a difference: it’s in the Australian outback and instead of the usual cowboys we have a formidable matriarchal figure – the heavily pregnant, shotgun-toting Molly Johnson, played by the film’s director and writer, Leah Purcell, who won an Australian Academy Award for her commanding performance. Molly is tending to her children on an isolated homestead while her husband is on a long sheep drive when her quiet existence is upturned after an aboriginal fugitive stumbles into her property.
A simple and effective film about resistance, courage and resilience with all the usual positives from this genre – beautiful vistas, tense stand offs and strong characters
