Director: Mark Mylod
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult
Comedy | Horror | Thriller | UK | 2022 | 1 hr 47 mins
Directed by Mark (Succession) Mylod, this film starts off as a thriller / suspense movie as a disparate group of characters arrive by boat to Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant on a private island owned by celebrity chef Julian Slowik. Dinner begins, and Slowik introduces a series of courses, during which he delivers increasingly unsettling monologues as the film gradually evolves into something much more wild, which will only really be appreciated as satire. Is there a deep message as some think, and if so what is it? Some think it’s a satire on movie-making; others that it’s a satire on America, where the cheeseburger is the heart of America. Another reflects on the costs of being an artist. Or that it’s about
the incompetence of the rich. Perhaps it just pokes fun at everything. Whatever, it’s certainly a film that’s unique, thrilling
and entertaining – and a very apt film on Halloween.
