Description
The Old Oak (15)
Director: Ken Loach
Starring: Dave Turner, Ebla Mari, Trevor Fox, Debbie Honeywood
Drama | UK | 1 hr 53 mins
The future looks bleak for the last remaining pub, The Old Oak, in a village in Northeast England, where people are leaving the land, the mines are closed, houses are cheap and the locals are angry and resentful. The arrival of a busload of terrified Syrians only worsens the tensions in this deprived community.
“As ever, Loach shows himself to be the John Bunyan of social realism… He is the fierce plain-speaker of political indignation with a style that is unironised and unadorned…. It is a film-making language utterly without the cynical twang that is de rigueur for everyone else…. I hope that this isn’t Loach’s final film, but if it is, he has concluded with a ringing statement of faith in compassion for the oppressed”.
