Adapted from an award-winning stage play and dominated by an Oscar winning performance by Brendan Fraser as massively obese English teacher Charlie, divorced from his wife and estranged from his daughter, this is a film which puts its actors and its viewers through the wringer. The film doesn’t flinch from showing Charlie, his size, his binge eating, his almost inability to move, yet what we hear from him and learn about him leaves us deeply moved, aware of the contradictions between the outer and the inner man. It’s a film which draws on and evokes in us many different emotions.
