The final film in the multi award-winning Three Colours trilogy, linked to “fraternity” ideal of the French national maxim, closes in grand fashion, with a meditation on fate and chance. It stars Irène Jacob as a sweet-souled yet sombre runaway model in Geneva whose life intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant. Red, described by Ebert as an anti-romance, explores the diverse themes of destiny and platonic love. Often listed as one of the greatest films, it is a splendid final statement from a remarkable filmmaker at the height of his powers.
