Women Talking (15) | Mowlem Theatre

Director: Sarah Polley
Starring: Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Ben Whishaw
Drama | 2022 | 1 hr 44 mins

Women Talking is adapted from a novel by Miriam Toews, herself raised in a Mennonite community and based on a real-life mass rape case from 2011 in an ultra-conservative religious Mennonite community in Bolivia where the men, over a four-year period, had been spraying farm-animal anaesthetic into the bedrooms of sleeping wives, daughters and mothers and raping them. The men then blamed Satan or claimed it was “wild female imagination”. In the film the traumatised women in a remote religious community are left while the men go to post bail for the accused and the women then attempt to reconcile their reality with their faith and to decide on whether to forgive, to flee, or to stay and fight. Polley received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and the film was nominated for numerous awards.
